Why reading to children is so important...
- Babies begin to learn language from birth. Reading aloud exposes children to the sounds of human speech.
- By the age of two, children know between 300-500 words. Children who are spoken to and read to have larger vocabularies and develop into better readers.
- Reading aloud to babies, toddlers and preschoolers lays the foundation for learning to read.
Library Storytime Benefits:
- Storytime creates in children an appetite for reading and for using the library.
- Reading together as part of a group experience encourages children to respect other children and the storyteller as well as library materials.
- Reading and singing in storytime stimulates children's imaginations.
- Listening to stories helps children develop language, listening, and motor skills.
